The Power of Organization

On Tuesday night, Maryland men’s basketball team pulled off a major upset over 5th ranked Wisconsin. The Terrapins handed Wisconsin just its 3rd loss of the season, ending the Badger’s 10 game winning streak. The game was noteworthy, but even more impressive than the play on the court was what happened in the stands.

Terrapin fans staged the following flash mob…

I am not sure how they pulled this off. Did they ask everyone to show up 30 minutes early so they could practice before the game? Was there a note on each seat letting people know what was going to happen? Did it all just kind of come together in a once in a lifetime perfect dance storm?

No matter how it was put together, it is great. Not only did they choreograph a two minute long dance consisting of thousands of people, but they somehow were able to have the students to remove their coats, section by section to create a souped up version of the wave.

And apparently it’s not the first time Maryland has done this.

You may look at this and say, “big deal. So they got a bunch of rowdy college students to dance around wildly, who cares?”

Yes, students may love to go crazy at sporting events, but undergrads are aren’t the most reliable or organized group. Thinking back to my college days, it was hard enough getting five people to agree on Power Point slides for a presentation topic. Makes me appreciate the planning that went into a thousand person flash mob.

This just goes to show that when we are organized and have a common goal in mind, we can do some really cool things.
