5 Things We Can Learn From Cereal

I am not a foodie, but if there is one food I know well, it is cereal. I have been eating it consistently for 25+ years and some weeks it comprises 50% of my meals.

If there is one thing I have learned from cereal, it is that you can learn many things from cereal. Don’t believe me? Let’s visit another installment of Five Things We Can Learn From Everyday Objects.

Five Things We Can Learn From Cereal

1. Don’t Wait Too Long

Rice Krispies are a fantastic cereal. They taste great and they have a great marketing strategy that publicizes their ability to snap, crackle & pop. It can be fun to spend a few seconds listening to the cereal make noise in milk. But if you wait too long, something awful happens. The cereal gets soggy. Then you are left with mush. And no one likes mush.

When we are chasing our dreams, it can be fun to talk about what we are doing. We are proud of our ability and we want to let the world know that we can snap, crackle and pop. But if we spend too much time talking, our goals will get soggy. Okay, maybe they won’t really get soggy, but you get the idea.

2. Variety Is The Spice of Life

I am not afraid to profess my love for Cheerios, but occasionally we need to see other people. After a couple of weeks in a row of only having cheerios each morning, I am ready for something new. Eventually I will go back to the wholesome goodness, but a man cannot live on Cheerios alone.

Consistency is important when trying to master a craft, but without a little variety, you may become stagnant. Incorporate variety into your game plan. If you want to be a writer, switch up your writing by trying a new notebook or by writing from a different location. The change does not need to be massive. Sometimes you just need to substitute your Cheerios for some Honey Nut Cheerios.

3. You Will Need Help

Plain cereal is good, but cereal with milk is so much better. Even cereal needs help from milk to reach its full potential.

We will all need some assistance to meet our full potential. Our assistance might come from a mentor or someone we hardly know. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Find your milk and things will taste that much better.

4. Mix It Up

Sometimes when I am feeling a little crazy, I will mix two cereals together. Wild I know, but that is just how I run my life. Mixing in some granola with a bowl of Rice Krispies can create a delicious mix of crunch to go with my snap, crackle & pop.

Is your business is becoming stale? Mix things up, even if it feels unnatural. In the movie Yes Man, Jim Carey joins a running photography club and hilarity ensues. Running and photography are not necessarily funny independently. But mix them together and you might just add some crunch to your snap crackle & pop.

5. Greatness Comes In All Shapes & Sizes

Some cereal comes in a box, and some comes in a bag. Others come in a resealable box/bag combo. There is no rule that states cereal has to come in a certain shape or size. Each one is a little unique.

Your dream may come in many shapes and sizes. And that is a great thing. Just because your neighbor’s success has looked a certain way, that does not mean your success has to be a mirror image. Find your own unique shape and size.
