I Wish I Wrote It: Don’t Relax: Uncomfortability Is The New Convenience

This Fast Company article begins with an awesome sub-headline:

To stop humanity from turning into useless, pleasure-seeking blobs, some designers are abandoning the quest to make everything easy, and introducing a little extra difficulty into our lives.”

Talk about a great hook.

We could all use a little kick to be more active. What if that nudge came from our key racks, or elevators. This article takes a fascinating look into a growing market of products designed to push us toward making better choices in the moment, even if that choice comes with an inconvenience.

I not only “Wish I Wrote” this article, but I wish I was smart enough to come of with some of these ingenious inventions. Some of the clever inconveniences include:

  • An elevator in Germany that sends you to the wrong floor and tells you to take a flight of stairs for a little exercise.
  • A  car that plays the sound of children playing anytime you drive by a school, reminding you to slow down.
  • A stool that always wobbles, forcing you to pay attention to your posture.
  • A lamp that only turns on when you put your phone inside, helping you to limit your addiction to your mobile device.
