I Wish I Wrote It: Forget About Setting Goals

Many times, I will read something online and immediately think, “that was great, I wish I wrote it.” Even though I didn’t write, I can still share it. Here’s the latest…

Forget About Setting Goals. Focus On This Instead. By James Clear

Our society seems to be driven by goals. The goal to lose weight. The goal to find a spouse. The goal to reach our goals.

While contemplating his goals, writer James Clear made an important realization…

When it comes to actually getting things done and making progress in the areas that are important to you, there is a much better way to do things.”

Clear argues that rather than focusing on goals, we should focus on our system. If we are a writer, our goal is to write a book, but our system is the writing schedule that we follow each week.

This particularly hit home with me. One of my goals for the year is to write my second children’s book. I am well on my way to hitting that goal and you know why? Because of my ability to carve out time to go to the library and write. Simply looking at the goal on my cork-board hasn’t gotten me anywhere. My system has.

Clear asks the question:

If you completely ignored your goals and focused only on your system, would you still get results?”

For me, the answer would be yes.

How about you?
